Top 5 Myths About Renting a Storage Unit in Peru, IL

The team at In Towne Self-Storage has been helping people in Peru at 4428 Hollerich Dr for a while now, and we keep hearing the same myths and misconceptions about storage units. Some of these ideas stop people from using storage when it would actually solve their problems, so let's set the record straight.

In this blog, we’ll discuss the five biggest myths we hear and the reality behind them.

Myth #1: Storage Units Are Only for Hoarders

This one drives us crazy because it couldn't be further from the truth. Yeah, we've all seen that reality TV show, but that's not what actual storage looks like.

Most of our customers at In Towne are completely normal people dealing with life transitions. We're talking college students from Illinois Valley Community College storing stuff over summer, families between houses during moves, small business owners managing inventory, people downsizing, and military families during deployment.

One customer told us she felt embarrassed about needing storage because she thought it meant she had "too much stuff." Turns out she was helping her elderly mom transition to assisted living and needed temporary space for furniture with sentimental value nobody was ready to part with yet.

Storage is a tool for managing space during transitions and life changes. It's not a character flaw.

Myth #2: Storage Is Super Expensive and Not Worth It

Nobody wants to throw money away on unnecessary expenses. But the "storage is expensive" myth usually comes from people who've never actually priced it out or compared it to alternatives.

Let's do some actual math:

A basic 5x10 unit in Peru runs roughly $50-75 per month. That's about $2-3 per day. Compare that to:

  • Renting a larger apartment just for storage space: $200-400+ more per month
  • Paying for a moving company to haul stuff to a relative's house and back: $500-1000+
  • Replacing items you got rid of but later needed: Could be hundreds or thousands
  • The stress and relationship strain of cramming everything into your living space: Priceless (and not in a good way)

Myth #3: My Stuff Will Get Ruined by Mold, Pests, or Theft

This myth has some historical truth to it. Old-school storage facilities with poor security and no climate control did have issues. But modern facilities (like ours) are completely different.

Here's what actually protects your stuff:

Security cameras, gated access, and individual unit locks mean theft is extremely rare. In our years at this location, incidents are almost non-existent because we take security seriously.

Climate-controlled units maintain consistent temperature and humidity, which prevents mold, mildew, and damage from Peru's seasonal temperature swings. If you're storing anything you care about, climate control is available and worth it.

Proper packing prevents most pest issues. We give customers advice on how to pack correctly. Sealed plastic bins instead of cardboard boxes, keeping items off the floor, not storing food items (seems obvious, but people ask).

The horror stories you hear usually involve people who stored improperly in the cheapest possible conditions and ignored common-sense precautions. That's avoidable.

Myth #4: I'm Locked Into Long Contracts I Can't Get Out Of

This one probably comes from confusion with other industries. Gyms, phone contracts, and apartment leases. Storage isn't like that, at least not here.

We do month-to-month rentals. You're not signing a year-long commitment. Need storage for two months during a move? Perfect. Need it for two years while you figure out your living situation? Also perfect.

There's no penalty for leaving when you're done. Give us proper notice (usually just showing up and clearing out your unit), and you're free to go.

Some places offer discounts for prepaying multiple months, but that's optional, not required. You're never trapped.

The flexibility is actually one of the main benefits of storage. It adapts to your situation rather than forcing you into rigid terms.

Myth #5: I Don't Have Enough Stuff to Justify a Storage Unit

People say this a lot, and it's based on the assumption that storage units are giant warehouse spaces. Not even close.

Our smallest units are 5x5. That's basically a walk-in closet. It holds about 10-15 boxes or a small bedroom's worth of furniture. You don't need a houseful of stuff to make storage worthwhile.

We've rented to people storing:

  • Just seasonal decorations (Christmas, Halloween, etc.)
  • A few pieces of inherited furniture are not ready to use yet
  • Business inventory that takes up one corner of a small unit
  • Sports equipment that cycles seasonally
  • Important documents and files that need secure storage

One customer rents a tiny unit just for her extensive holiday decoration collection. She loves decorating but hates how much space it takes in her Peru home year-round. The problem was solved with a small unit.

If you're thinking, "I don't have enough for storage," you might be surprised. It's about solving a specific space problem, not about having massive amounts of stuff.

Our Take from In Towne Self Storage

We're not going to pretend storage is perfect for everyone or solves every problem. But it's way more practical, affordable, and useful than the myths suggest.

Most of our Peru customers wished they'd rented storage sooner instead of struggling with space issues for months or years. The myths and misconceptions held them back from a solution that would've made their lives easier.

If you're on the fence about storage because of something you've heard, come talk to us. We'll give you straight answers about whether storage makes sense for your specific situation. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't, but at least you'll know the reality instead of operating on myths.

Storage isn't mysterious or scary. It's just practical space management. And in Peru, where housing costs have climbed, and people are being more strategic about living space, it's become a genuinely useful tool for a lot of situations.

Don't let myths stop you from exploring a solution that might actually work. At a minimum, get the real facts and make an informed decision.
